Ellie and the Harpmaker by Hazel Prior takes us on an interesting journey with two narrators after they bumble into one another’s lives unexpectedly. While this random friendship blossoms, the consequences have a ripple effect on each of their lives. It’s a thoughtful look at the question: What happens when we allow ourselves to chase our dreams?
Ellie stumbles upon the Harp Barn one day and irrevocably changes her life. She takes one little step towards crossing an item off of her bucket list and ends up landing right on the path to becoming who she was meant to be. It’s an encouraging story filled with delightful, well developed characters.
While most of the characters are likable, there are a few that raise suspicions, just like in real life. There are many tense moments when certain characters safety is feared for and uncertain. Yet at the same time, life moves in a circular fashion where bad moments can lead to good. There are several thought provoking plot points sure to have you thinking about it days later (or at least that’s the case for me!)
Set as fall settles into winter in the English countryside, this book is perfect for this time of year!
With beautifully crafted characters and a setting sure to fill your mind with breathtaking vistas, this novel is an enjoyable read that may forever change the way you look at harps.
